One of the three surviving trees standing outside the Southern Gate at Hougoumont has been brought down in a gale. It has however been cordoned off and it will be searched for any mementoes of the battle embeded in its trunk. It is to be hoped that the new saplings taken from one of the trees can soon be planted as replacements.
