Although not purely a ‘Waterloo’ book I had to mention this new volume from Bernard and Rene Wilkin. It is fascinating to see the views of the French fighting the British, regarding their adversaries and takes thing on from Andrew Field’s excellent series, by looking at their changing attitudes of the British as soldiers as the wars went on. I was particularly struck however, by the excellent section on British prisons and the treatment of French prisoners of war with Bernard’s criticism of the modern myth of the terrible treatment that the prisoners supposedly endured, explaining that for the time, their treatment was generally better than most. Very well recommended.
